Transcript of above

29th January 1944

Dear Mum, Very glad to hear your house keeper is doing well. All my parcels up to and including June have arrived for all of which and skill in selecting contents many thanks. Regards to Mrs Richardson, I hope Mr R is still doing well. Good cards and good luck, Alan.

27th July 1943

Dear Mum, Glad to see bowls going strong. Sorry you lost triplets match but see you made it a good excuse for a tea party, a move much admired by me and also a little envied, having been without tea for some time now. However, we shall soon be able to make up for that together. Love to all, Alan.

Alan Birley Bateman’s letters home from inside Stalagluft 3, while held as prisoner of war between 1942 and 1945. These letters give a first-hand, fascinating insight into life in the camp, and covers the period of “The Great Escape”
