Alan’s letters 4

Transcript of above

26th July 1944

Dear Bill, is it possible to have a battle dress made an sent here? Size same as uniform at home with F/Lt stripes and pilot wings also field service cap. I believe a uniform parcel can be sent in addition to usual quarterly parcels. Could you also send some white shirts with detached collars, Love Alan.

It looks as if you will be having another war-time birthday so here’s wishing you many happy returns of the 20th. I hope we shall be able to celebrate properly before long. Mail is rather erratic these days but I hope you get some of my letters in reasonable time. All the best for the 20th, love to you both, Alan.

Alan Birley Bateman’s letters home from inside Stalagluft 3, while held as prisoner of war between 1942 and 1945. These letters give a first-hand, fascinating insight into life in the camp, and covers the period of “The Great Escape”
